Toaster is one of those films where the idea itself sounds a bit weird… and that’s exactly what makes it interesting.
Directed by Vivek Daschaudary, the film stars Rajkummar Rao in a role that feels right in his comfort zone — slightly odd, slightly intense, and very unpredictable.
The story is simple on the surface. A man gets obsessed with a toaster he gifted at a wedding. But the way things spiral from there… that’s where the film finds its identity.
It’s not your typical comedy. It’s dark, awkward at times, and honestly, a bit uncomfortable too. But that’s kind of the point.
The film revolves around Ramakant, a miserly man who takes money very seriously. Like… very seriously.
He’s the kind of person who thinks twice before spending even small amounts. So when he ends up giving a toaster as a wedding gift, it’s already a big deal for him.
But things don’t stop there.
Instead of moving on, he becomes obsessed with that toaster. He starts thinking about it constantly. Was it worth it? Did they deserve it? Should he have kept it?
At first, it feels funny. You laugh at how petty it is.
Then slowly, things start getting strange.
His obsession begins affecting his behavior. His relationships. The way he reacts to people. What was once a small thought now turns into something much bigger.
And then… chaos kicks in.
Situations escalate. Misunderstandings happen. And somewhere in between all this, the film takes a darker turn. It’s not just about a toaster anymore. It becomes about control, ego, and how far someone can go over something that seems completely trivial.
The film doesn’t rush. It builds slowly. And when things finally start falling apart, it feels messy… in a very real way.

To be honest… this film isn’t for everyone. If you’re expecting a typical comedy, with clear jokes and a simple story. It might confuse you. The film’s tone is a bit different. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes awkward, and sometimes even a little disturbing.
Rajkummar Rao gives a solid performance. His character is both irritating, funny, and somehow real. You might think, “This guy is overreacting”… but then you’ll think, “Maybe people are like that.”
Sanya Malhotra’s role feels a little grounded. When the film starts to get too weird, her presence brings some balance.
The supporting cast also does a good job, especially Abhishek Banerjee—his screen presence is always intriguing. The film’s biggest plus is its concept. Making a small thing so big—and exploring human behavior through it—isn’t easy.
But that’s the problem.
The second half feels a bit uneven. At times, the story seems to be heading in a clear direction, and then suddenly shifts. The pacing also feels slow at times. Not everyone will connect with this narrative.
The music and technical aspects are decent, but not standout.
Overall, this is an experimental film. It’s risky. Not everyone will like it. But people who want to watch a little different cinema may find this interesting.
